Emerson Climate Technologies was asked by a major supermarket chain to
implement a more energy efficient ventilation system for its more than
800 stores. Since the company’s annual energy consumption runs
into the millions of dollars, capturing energy savings would significantly add to the company’s bottom line. Selling perishable foods, fresh treated air in its stores -- better control of temperature, humidity, and circulation -- was viewed by the company as a major factor in customer satisfaction and retention.
For a major part of the solution, Emerson Climate Technologies turned to Emerson Control Techniques and the Commander SE, the Simple-to-install and Easy-to-use Variable Speed Drive (VSD). The Commander SE is the ideal general purpose, open-loop vector drive to increase energy efficiency in fan and pump applications.
Why Variable Speed Drives Cut Energy Costs
The Commander SE is particularly well-suited for use in centrifugal fan and pump applications. It provides many key features not found on other economical drives, including, Mains Dip Ride Through, Flexible Reference Control, Skip Frequencies, Independent PID, and an Energy Metering and Operating Cost Indicator -- all standard.
The primary reason the rugged, compact device is ideal for HVAC energy savings, however, is it is a Variable Speed Drive. As the chart to the right shows, VSD’s provide only the energy required. They also eliminate the need for expensive control valves, and coupled with the energy savings provide a payback in months.
